Title: My Favourite Half-Night Stand
Author: Christina Lauren
Genre: Young Adult, Romance
Millie Morris has always been one of the guys. A UC Santa Barbara professor, she’s a female-serial-killer expert who’s quick with a deflection joke and terrible at getting personal. And she, just like her four best guy friends and fellow professors, is perma-single.
So when a routine university function turns into a black-tie gala, Mille and her circle make a pact that they’ll join an online dating service to find plus-ones for the event. There’s only one hitch: after making the pact, Millie and one of the guys, Reid Campbell, secretly spend the sexiest half-night of their lives together but mutually decide the friendship would be better off strictly platonic.
But online dating isn’t for the faint of heart. While the guys are inundated with quality matches and potential dates, Millie’s first profile attempt garners nothing but dick pics and creepers. Enter “Catherine”—Millie’s fictional profile persona, in whose make-believe shoes she can be more vulnerable than she’s ever been in person. Soon “Catherine” and Reid strike up a digital pen-pal-ship…but Millie can’t resist temptation in real life, either. Soon, Millie will have to face her worst fear—intimacy—or risk losing her best friend, forever.
I knew I would love this book the moment I saw it. You know when you just have a gut instinct that THIS IS GOING TO BE GREAT! That was this book for me, and it did NOT disappoint. There was just so much that I enjoyed about it. I am always drawn to books by their cover; I wish I wasn’t but that is just how I am. This cover was a really fun, text chat bubble. The simple colours really spoke to me, and Christina Lauren is also a great author!
What I loved:
The characters in “My Favourite Half-Night Stand” are amazing! Each brings a fun different dynamic to the group. You have Reid, the nerdy but hot leader, and then Millie the crime loving weirdo; the other guys are only small characters but they are what brings the whole story together. They just seemed like the typical friend group. Except that it all goes haywire when Reid and Millie have sex; then continue having sex until they realize they have caught feelings for each other. This is all happening while none of their friends know and they are using dating apps!
The dating app aspect of the story I really enjoy. They go through making their profile bios and choosing their matches. It’s funny because the guys suck at making their bios so Millie ends up writing them all for them. The book lays out these interactions in chat bubbles, and I love it. It makes you feel like your part of the group chatting with the characters. I love when authors bring a different interactive layout to their books.
I also really enjoyed the deepness of this book. Millie is really struggling with communicating her feelings and the problems she is having at home. They are all adults but it just goes to show that no matter how old you are you can still struggle. This book really emphasized how Millie’s whole friend group really came together when she needed them, and always had her back. She was so worried that talking about her problems would make her a downer and someone they wouldn’t want to be around; it turns out that they want her to open up just as much as she needed to.
My Favourite Half-Night Stand features Millie, a strong crime loving weirdo. I love her as a character so much because she is able to just hang out with the guys, which is something I can really relate to. She also brings a fun and edgy sexuality to the book. She is always very direct with Reid in what she wants from him sexually, and you can totally see that in her character. Many romance novels are either all about sex or they don’t talk about it at all. This book, however, is a great mix of both! There are some sexy scenes but nothing too over the top.
What I wanted more of:
As someone who is always wanting more out of character development, I was really not left wondering anything with My Favourite Half-Night Stand. It gave me a good amount of backstory for each character at the beginning, and an overview of their dynamic and how they are in their daily life. The ending was also amazing! It tied up any loose ends and didn’t leave me wondering what happened after. I am a sucker for sweet mushy endings and this totally had one that made me laugh with excitement!
This was my first 5-star book of the year! I loved it!
